The First Step research we did for Julie’s Bicycle, the creative industries green experts, identified music venues as accounting for almost a quarter (125,000 tonnes of CO2e) of UK music industry’s emissions profile (excluding touring and audience travel), while the Mayor of London’s Green Theatre Guide identified that theatre venues account for nearly 50,000 tonnes of CO2 in London alone.

sMeasure is working closely with Julie’s Bicycle to support environmental management across the built environment of the cultural estate. Nearly 80 music and theatre venues of all sizes are now signed up to sMeasure as a first step in getting to grips with their environmental impact. Such a sector-wide approach for building energy management is unique. It demonstrates the leadership of the cultural sector in developing a deep response to climate change. Exciting times ahead!

sMeasure fits neatly with Industry Green, developed by Julie’s Bicycle as a sector appropriate certification programme for responding to climate change. Industry Green has four principles to which organisations adhere:

  • Communicate efforts to performers, staff, suppliers and audiences

The scientifically rigorous assessment process of Industry Green certification will enable your organisation to communicate with confidence the serious efforts it has taken in response to climate change.

We recommend you use theIndustry Green (IG) tool alongside sMeasure as these tools together will enable you to systematically understand your organisations climate change impact. Whereas sMeasure only calculates carbon emissions from your building(s) energy use, the IG tool (for venues, offices, festivals and tours) will calculate your annual carbon footprint:

  • Water use
  • Waste to landfill
  • Business travel
  • Audience travel

From sMeasure you will be able to pull out your annual building energy use figures by fuel type to input into the IG tool.
