Coalition pledges to cut central government emissions by 10%

12th May 2010

The new Conservative-Lib Dem coalition has pledged to cut central government emissions by 10% in the next 12 months - equivalent to taking more than 200,000 cars off the road.

Emissions from central government are about 1% of total UK emissions - as much as the city of Liverpool. A 10% cut is amounts to 600,000 tonnes of CO2.

Using sMeasure to monitor buildings energy will help your department or organisation cut emissions to achieve this goal.

Councils, NHS, Police, Fire Departments and any other government organisation can use sMeasure to help identify and track emissions savings.

Monitoring your buildings energy use has two benefits:

1. Contribute towards the pledge to cut central government emissions by 10%

2. Lowering carbon emissions potentially cut bills for your government department

Our building energy analysis will help your council or department meet regulatory and voluntary compliance requirements, such as:

  • Carbon Reduction Commitment (CRC) scheme
  • Display Energy Certificates
  • ISO 14001
  • Carbon Trust Standard

* Building’s management can use the tool to monitor and reduce energy bills and carbon footprint. The A-G bands provide an excellent indication of the rating you would likely receive if you were to get an official DEC prepared.

* See your council or other building’s energy efficiency against weather conditions and discover your actual versus predicted energy use.

London Low Carbon Zones

sMeasure can also help you implement and monitor initiatives and campaigns to reduce carbon emissions in your borough or area.

sMeasure is currently supporting and working with the following Low Carbon Zones (LCZ) communities in London: Muswell Hill (London Borough (LB) of Haringey), Archway (LB Islington), Queen’s Park (LB Westminster), Barking (LB Barking & Dagenham), Ham and Petersham (LB Richmond) and Brixton, (LB Lambeth).

Low Carbon Zones is a community-led approach to cutting the London’s CO2 emissions. Ten London boroughs have won support and funding from the Mayor and GLA to create local Low Carbon Zones. These will provide model examples that can later be rolled out both within and beyond London.

The short-term aim of the scheme is to achieve a 20.12% reduction in carbon by 2012, and helping towards the Mayor’s target of a 60% cut in CO2 emissions by 2025. Longer-term the ambition is for London to become the world’s environmentally friendly city. Collecting data through sMeasure for businesses and imeasure imeasure for homes in the participating LCZ communities will help quantify the real emissions savings and improvements achieved by the LCZ initiative.

The energy data is used by Oxford University's Centre for the Environment for research purposes and ultimately to inform energy policy as well as investment and programmes to reduce energy use and carbon emissions.

Bringing energy monitoring to local and national government via councils, boroughs, NHS, fire departments and schools.
