Universities energy monitoring

As one of the world’s great universities, Oxford has a significant positive impact at a global, national and local level. We are known for the high quality of our environmental teaching and research and in parallel with this, the University is working internally to reduce its impact on the environment through its Environmental Sustainability Policy.

Professor Andrew Hamilton FRS, Vice Chancellor

sMeasure can be used by staff and researchers as well as students, for a variety of benefits:

  • Stop energy wastage
  • Meet university and government mandates to reduce carbon emissions
  • Support student curriculum and study projects

University buildings and maintenance departments

Can benefit from energy monitoring with regards to regulations such as:

  • The Climate Change Levy - a tax on energy delivered to non-domestic users – ultimately paid for by Universities through electricity bills. The Levy’s aim is to provide an incentive to increase energy efficiency and reduce CO2 emissions
  • Display Energy Certificates – which are displayed in buildings visited by the public to show the actual energy usage of a building, and rank performance against standard benchmarks. DECs help the public to see the energy consumption figures of a building on a day to day basis.
  • Carbon Reduction Commitment – The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme is a mandatory carbon emissions trading scheme to cover all organisations using more than 6,000MWh per year of electricity (equivalent to an annual electricity bill of about £500,000), in which many universities must participate in

Student and research fellows

  • Monitor your buildings energy consumption
  • Benchmark your usage against typical data
  • Access degree day data
  • Contribute towards discussions
  • Utilise the resources
  • Read up on the research undertaken
  • Sign-up for the environmental newsletter

Resources

As well as the resources outlined above provided by sMeasure, you may use the following:

  • The CRC Energy Efficiency Scheme
  • 10:10
  • Energy Toolkit
  • sMeasure and the University of Oxford

sMeasure has the support of the University of Oxford Energy Conservation Engineer and Sustainability team, and sMeasure supports the implementation of the University of Oxford Energy Toolkit for university department staff and students
